Lane Energy controlled by Conoco Phillips, started production tests in Lebork, in northern Poland, in July. After a month of drilling operations at the well, the company has announced it is extracting 8,000 cubic metres of shale gas per day.

According to the Chief Geologist Piotr Wozniak, this is largest amount of shale gas extracted in Europe so far. (Reuters)

Although this can’t be qualified as commercial gas production, it is a positive sign for Poland, which saw three big oil and gas majors – Exxon Mobil, Marathon Oil and Talisman Energy – leaving the country due to poor drilling results.

Poland, which wants to reduce its gas imports from Russia, is encouraging more international firms to invest in its promising energy resources.

Will Poland move to commercial production soon? Let me know your thoughts.
